In an announcement, the Chinese-owned multiplex cinema operator said it would reopen all 10 of its theatres across New Zealand from tomorrow, following a successful trial reopening with its three Christchurch cinemas late last week. The cinema chain will be re-showing movies that were released earlier in the year, before the Covid pandemic forced a mandatory shutdown of all businesses and entertainment venues at the end of March.

Hoyts said its had been planning for the reopening of its locations during the lockdown period to ensure its customers and staff were in the “safest possible environment”. It had been retraining staff, implemented additional cleaning measures and encouraged online bookings as part of this, he said. It will continue to offer the option to purchase tickets and food and drink online in advance of screenings.

Last month, Hoyts told the Herald it had opened its three Christchurch locations as part of testing new ways of operating with additional cleaning measurements and inline with Ministry of Health guidelines. These measures include additional staff training, temperature checks for staff, additional cleaning protocols, in-cinema seat separation chequerboard style, encouragement for online bookings and social distancing.

New Zealand’s largest cinema chain last week said it could still be more than a month before it reopens its 19 multiplex cinema locations. Most businesses and other entertainment venues have reopened after the mandatory lockdown, but cinemas have remained closed through alert levels 4, 3 and 2. National cinema group Reading Cinemas has since reopened its nine theatres, albeit with reduced seating numbers and increased hygiene measures.

Palace Cinemas has become the first movie chain to announce a reopening date as coronavirus restrictions are eased, with social distancing likely to keep at least 65 per cent of seats vacant initially. Credit: Universal. That is earlier than expected given the major cinema chains, led by Event, Hoyts and Village, have been planning their returns around the release of Christopher Nolan’s thriller Tenet on July While the Yatala Drive-In in south-east Queensland opened with social distancing restrictions earlier this month, the return to movie-going in capital cities started with Event’s surprise reopening of the Skyline Drive-in western Sydney last weekend.

Village’s Coburg Drive-In in Melbourne’s northern suburbs is due to follow next week. Victoria has allowed cinemas to reopen for a maximum of 50 people per auditorium from June 22 but Palace chief executive Benjamin Zeccola believes restrictions will have been eased enough in all states and territories for screenings to resume 10 days later. Instead of six sessions a day in cinemas, he expected there would be just three initially because of the need for intensive cleaning of all surfaces between screenings.

With groups able to sit together – separated from other patrons – cinemas would have just 20 to 35 per cent of seats occupied initially. Palace also plans to resume the French Film Festival which was cut short when the pandemic forced cinemas to close in March. Mr Zeccola said the chain wanted to reopen with new releases rather than films that had already screened in cinemas or were available online. Like AMC, Hoyts is the number two cinema operator by screen count in its territory. The price Wanda ponied up for Hoyts and how it was financing the deal was not divulged when news of the sale was first made public. Rather than starting at the turn of the Twentieth Century, when the company that would eventually become the Hoyts Group first began operating, lets just venture back a little over ten years. More than a few financial analysts believed the two companies were paying too high a premium for the Hoyts Group, the parent company of Hoyts Exhibition, the cinema screen advertising firm Val Morgan and the film distributor Hoyts Distribution.

For PEP, Hoyts was always a short-term investment meant to be turned into a stable, if not somewhat profitable, venture that would lead to a lucrative exit in the form of a liquidation event such as a sale or public offering. In the company abandoned its plans to float the company when the market proved too volatile for IPOs. This allowed the firm to recoup almost all the money they had spent purchasing Hoyts Group.

Earlier in Hoyts had pressed the pause button on their video-on-demand service, Stream, which the company had been developing for upwards of two years. Despite what was reported to be a successful roadshow for Hoyts before its IPO, the financial markets were looking a bit dodgy by for its IPO in November and PEP entered into acquisition talks with several interested parties. Wanda Cinema Line was heavily rumored to be interested in acquiring Hoyts, which had grown to screens in 50 complexes, 40 in Australia and 10 in New Zealand.

Sun barely had time to unpack his bags at Hoyts or get new business cards printed before, less than six months after announcing the purchase of the circuit, he is now selling the company to Wanda Cinema Line. This will only validate those who assumed Sun was purchasing Hoyts last December so that the Dalian Wanda Group could grab hold of it at a later, more opportune date. Certainly such a maneuver could directly benefit Sun financially.
